FAQ

Is PickName free?

Yes. No login, no credit card, no usage cap. Generate as many usernames as you want.

Does PickName check if a username is available?

No. Availability checks would require logging into each platform on your behalf. PickName validates that a generated name fits the platform's character rules (length, allowed characters, case), then you paste it into the platform's signup to check availability there.

Will PickName store my seed word or generated names?

No. Everything runs in your browser. We don't have a database for usernames and we don't log your seeds. The only third-party scripts on the page are Google Analytics for traffic counting and AdSense for ads.

Why are some styles producing very similar results?

Each style draws from a hand-picked vocabulary of about 18 adjectives and 18 nouns. With a short seed and a narrow style, repetition is expected. Generate again or expand the seed for more variety.

Can I use these for a business name?

PickName generates personal handles. For brand and business names you usually want trademark search and domain availability checks too — those are a different problem.

Why does Discord force lowercase?

Discord migrated to a global, case-insensitive username system in May 2023. Internally everything is lowercase, so even if you typed mixed case at signup, it would be normalized to lowercase. PickName previews the lowercase form so what you see is what Discord stores.

What's a 'cross-platform safe' username?

A name that survives every major platform's validation: 4 to 15 characters, lowercase letters and digits and underscore only, no leading number. If you want one handle on X, Reddit, Discord, GitHub, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, this band works on all of them.

Why no emoji in handles?

Most platforms block emoji at signup. The few that allow them in display names mostly forbid them in @-handles. PickName generates ASCII handles only by design, but you can use any emoji you want in your display name.

How do I make my username 'professional'?

Pick the Pro style, avoid leetspeak and number suffixes, and keep it under 20 characters. Real-name plus a craft word ('alex.codes', 'marina.builds') is the strongest professional pattern.

Can I share a generated name?

Yes — click any name to copy it to your clipboard. There's no account or save feature; the names regenerate fresh on each click of Generate.

Why does my generated name include numbers I didn't ask for?

Some templates add a 2 or 3 digit suffix, especially for the Gamer and Mystery styles. If you want number-free names, generate again or use the Minimal or Pro style which suppress number suffixes.

Do gamers still use _xX in 2026?

Mostly as a joke. Modern gamertag conventions are short, lowercase, often invented compounds like 'embermage' or 'driftknight'. PickName's Gamer style biases toward the modern pattern.

Are leetspeak handles still cool?

Stylistically dated unless used sparingly. PickName's Gamer style includes occasional leet substitution, but most of the output is readable lowercase.

Can I get the same handle on all platforms?

Use Cross-platform safe mode to pre-filter for a band that survives every major platform's signup rules. Then check actual availability on each platform manually.

Is the generator open source?

The code is closed for now. The wordbank and templates are hand-curated. If you have a request for a new style or a new platform, email choppy.young@gmail.com.
